Older Person’s SASS Grant
You may be eligible for a stipend to help you get through your golden years.
People above the age of 60 are eligible for an older person’s award.
The old age pension was the previous name for this payment.
How Do You Know If You Qualify?
- Be a citizen of South Africa, a permanent resident, or a refugee.
- I currently reside in South Africa.
- You will not be eligible for any other social assistance.
- In a governmental facility, they would not be cared for.
- If you’re single, you can’t make more than R86 280, and if you’re married, you can’t make more than R172 560.
- If you’re single, you can’t have more than R1 227 600 in assets, and if you’re married, you can’t have more than R2 455 200.
How Much Money Are You Going to Get?
You will get a maximum monthly payment of R1 890.
You will receive R1 910 if you are over the age of 75.
What method will you use to get paid?
The grant will be paid to you by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in one of the following ways:
- cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
- electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
When Will Your Grant Be Assessed?
SASSA has the authority to determine whether your grant needs to be reviewed.
This decision will be based on your income as indicated when you applied for the grant.
The date of the review or the date on which the life certificate is due will be communicated to you three months in advance.
If you get your money from a bank, an institution, or a procurator, you must fill out a life certificate every year at the SASSA offices.
When Is It Possible That Your Grant May Be Revoked?
Your grant may be suspended if you do any of the following:
- When Your Situation Changes
- The Result of A Review
- If You Do Not Cooperate with The Examination of Your Grant
- When You Defraud Someone or Make a False Statement About Yourself.
- If A Mistake Was Made in The Approval of Your Grant
When is your grant going to expire?
- pass away.
- are admitted to a state institution.
- do not claim for three consecutive months.
- are absent from the country.
Please note that if you are accepted to an institution that has a state-funded contract to care for you, your social grant will be lowered to 25% of the maximum amount.
This will begin the fourth month after your acceptance to that institution.
The decreased grant is reinstated as soon as you are released from the facility.
