Unclaimed SASSA SRD Grant

A Post Office employee is in court accused of stealing R200,000 in unclaimed SASSA SRD Grant

A guy from Cape Town was detained on suspicion of stealing money intended to be returned to the SA Social Security Agency (SASSA).

The beneficiaries had not picked up the funds at the post office.

The guy was detained on Monday at a post office in Bishop Lavis for theft, fraud, perjury, and forgery, according to Western Cape police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk.

The employee in charge of daily operations saw that approved beneficiaries were supposed to have received R200 000 in May but hadn’t.

Through a private security business, the money was intended to be sent back to the Post Office bank account.

To prove that the money had been taken to the bank, the guy had to fill out a deposit slip and a collection form, sign them, and then place them in the appropriate register.

As stated by Van Wyk, “it is believed the suspect placed fraudulent entries into these registers, suggesting the monies were truly collected by the security business and paid into the Post Office bank account, whereas this was not done.”

Another instance with a value of R500 000 was discovered by investigators and is also being looked into.

On Tuesday, the guy showed up in court to answer for his actions.

Cole Lee Fortuin’s case has been pushed back until September 29th, according to Eric Ntabazalila, a spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority.
