Pensioners discounted Electricity is one of the great benefits that comes with old age, including of course many other benefits.

Like any other rebate, pensioners discounted electricity need to be applied for, at the end of this reading there is a link to the application form.

Pensioners who are registered owners of residential properties are eligible for special refunds based on the gross monthly family income of all occupants.

How to Qualify for Rebate?

Pensioners must be at least 60 years old, own property, and live in it individually.

The property must not be worth more than R2 500 000.

On successful applications, pensioners who rely on the National Security Grant are eligible for a 100 percent return.

Receiving successful application, pensioners who are not on the National Security Grant but have a gross monthly income of less than R10 545 are eligible for a 100% reimbursement.

On successful application, pensioners who do not receive the National Security Grant but have a gross monthly income of more than R10 545 but less than R18 073 are eligible for a 50% rebate.

At least one of the owners must be 60 years old or older in the case of dual ownership.

If the applicant owns more than one property, the refund is only available to one of them.

At least one of the owners must be at least 60 years old if the property is owned jointly.

How to Apply for Pensioners Rebates

Fill out the Application for Senior Citizens and Disabled Persons Rate Rebate.

 The following is a list of requirements that needs to be accompanied by your application form.

  • Proof of income for the owner and their spouse/partner, as well as three months’ worth of original, printed bank statements for all accounts.
  • copies of the owner’s and spouse’s/identification partner’s
  • if you own extra property, documents of the leasing agreement
  • evidence of retirement.
  • evidence of dividends or investments
  • Usufruct/habitation/executor/administrator or curator evidence is required.
  • evidence of trust instrument and all beneficiaries’ income.
  • If the property is registered in the names of several owners, a copy of the applicant’s ID and evidence of income for all business owners is required.
  • If the property is registered as a Close Corporation, a copy of the applicant’s ID and proof of income for all other members are required.
  • a copy of the death certificate or, if relevant, the Will
  • any other papers deemed required by the City.

In the case of pensioners discount electricity, the city offers a LIFELINE TARIFF, but it must be requested by the client; it is not automatically applied and is subject to certain restrictions and requirements.

The average consumption over the preceding 12 months, as well as the municipal property valuation of that customer and the kind of meter present, are utilized to assess a particular customer at the time of evaluation.

Residents with a municipal property assessment of R400 000 or less, who receive less than 450 kWh per month on average (including any free energy), and who have a prepayment meter will be eligible for the LIFELINE TARIFF.
