Pretoria Central Prison
Former President Jacob Zuma renamed Pretoria Downtown Jail Kgosi Mampuru II Management Area on April 13, 2013, and it is often referred to as Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Services.
It is a big prison in central Pretoria, within the City of Tshwane in South Africa.
The South African Department of Correctional Services runs it.
Six correctional facilities are housed inside the complex, including the infamous C Max, Pretoria Local Jail, and a women’s prison.
Both the new name and the street name now contain the name of Kgosi Mampuru, a 19th-century local leader who fought colonial power and was executed in 1883.
Maximum Security Prison, Robben Island
Maximum Security Prison, located on Robben Island in Table Bay, 6.9 kilometers west of Bloubergstrand, Cape Town, South Africa, is currently dormant.
It is well-known since Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in jail there prior to the end of apartheid.
Following that, three former inmates of this institution, Nelson Mandela, Kgalema Motlanthe, and Jacob Zuma, were elected President of South Africa.
Pollsmoor Prison
Pollsmoor Prison, often known as Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison, is a South African prison located in the Tokai neighborhood of Cape Town.
Pollsmoor is a maximum-security prison where some of South Africa’s most dangerous offenders are still being held.
Despite the fact that the jail was built to hold a maximum of 4,336 inmates with a staff of 1,278, the present inmate population is above 7,000.
The Mangaung Prison
The Mangaung Jail is a privately run prison in Bloemfontein, South Africa’s Free State.
As part of a consortium, the jail is administered by the corporation G4S.
The consortium and the South African Department of Correctional Services inked a 25-year deal in 2000.
The jail has a capacity of 3,000 inmates.
The prison made headlines in October 2013 after the Department of Corrections briefly assumed control of the facility.
Following refusing to return to work after a strike, 330 members of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union were sacked in September.
A female caretaker with 13 years of experience was kidnapped by inmates in October.
A special police task group later saved her uninjured.
Westville Prison, KwaZulu-Natal
On the outskirts of Westville, a settlement inland from Durban, sits Westville Prison.
It is one of South Africa’s largest prisons and the only jail in the Durban region.
Westville Prison housed 40,000 prisoners as of 2005.
The penitentiary is in the Dawncliffe neighborhood, on the outskirts of Westville.
The complex’s entrance is on Harry Gwala Road.
The compound housing the jail’s wardens and other employees is located between the prison and Westville proper.
The rest of the jail is surrounded by the Roosfontein Nature Reserve, which serves as a buffer zone.
Brandvlei Correctional Centre
The Brandvlei Correctional Centre is a jail near Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa, on the bank of the Brandvlei Dam.
A maximum-security unit, a medium-security unit, and a juvenile unit are all housed there.
Members of the renowned The Numbers Gang or numbers gangs are also housed inside the prison.
Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons, a Netflix series, was filmed there in 2021.
According to the 2001 Census, the jail had a population of 3,020 people.
