SASSA Child Support Grant Top Up

According to Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu, the government’s most recent investment targeted at improving the lives of children living in poverty is raising the amount of the Child Support Grant for orphans.

Minister Zulu reaffirmed the department’s call for any relatives who are looking after orphaned children to step forward and apply for the Child Support Grant Top-Up at their local SASSA offices.

During a media conference on Monday in Pretoria, the Minister provided an update to the country about the Child Support Grant Top-Up.

It’s crucial to stress that the Child Support Grant Top-Up is not a brand-new grant, Minister Zulu said.

She said that a 2015 Cabinet-approved regulation made it possible to add R240 to the usual R480.

As the Minister of Social Development, the terms of this policy allow me to propose a greater value child support grant top-up for orphans.

As a result, I launched the Child Support Grant Top-Up on June 1, 2022, with the Minister of Finance’s support.

“By ‘Top-Up,’ we mean an additional R240 grant that is given in addition to the R480 basic Child Support Grant.

The Kid Support Grant Top-Up of R720 per child per month is only available to relatives who are raising an orphan, according to the minister.

All orphan carers should be aware, according to Minister Zulu, that they can apply for the Child Support Grant Top-Up at any SASSA office.

“No court order or Social Worker report is required to obtain the Top-Up.

This is intended to increase the CSG program’s accessibility so that it can better serve orphans’ fundamental needs.

She advised South Africans to remember that only children under the age of 18 who are caring for their orphaned siblings in child-headed families need to consult a social worker before they may contact SASSA.

Prior to contacting SASSA, she advised them to consult a social worker who would assess their circumstances, file the necessary paperwork in accordance with section 137 of the Children’s Act, and offer them the additional help they require as a result of living without an adult.
