Goldfields Mall…. The Heart of Welkom Goldfields Mall truly is the Heart of Welkom. But its appeal stretches beyond the greater Welkom and surrounds to attract a population of some 600 000 people, coming form as far afield as Hoopstad, Bultfontein, Kroonstad, Virginia and Hennenman.
The Centre is anchored by major retailers such as Checkers, Woolworths, Dis-chem as well as stores in the Truworths, TFG and Pepkor Groups. Though contemporary in design, the architectural style of the mall is a modern interpretation of the original sheet metal architecture rooted in the vernacular of the early mining town settlements.
The central Piazza space, functions as the heart of the mall and forms the traditional “Town Square” with all the associated ambience and interaction.
Visitors to the Piazza are familiar with our Rhino an enormous and strangely realistic shape of Mapompana, “The Short Fat One”. This larger-than-life solid concrete sculpture of a rather chubby rhinoceros hints at the fact that the area surrounding Welkom was once a flood plain roamed by mammoth animals in pre-historic times.
